Marco was one of the soloists in the performance of the Monteverdi Vespers at the 1999 Lacock Summer School, and made a great impression with the qualities
of his voice and his affable personality (writes Andrew van der Beek). When Andrew Lawrence-King and I talked about reviving Orfeo at the 2000 summer school Marco was the obvious choice for the title role. I had not asked
him until a couple of months later I happened to be in Amsterdam, and I boarded a tram. Being a foreigner, I had entered the wrong door and had to elbow my way down the crowded gangway to buy a ticket. One of the people blocking
the way was Marco. The pointing finger had descended from the cloud. This was the man.He sends this message:
Hello to all lovers of Lacock and music!
This small piece of literature
should give you a peek into my life and activities. Mind you: the objective is not to be complete, but rather to be understandable. After all, I´m Dutch, so...
In 1999 I had the pleasure to be present at the Lacock
Summer School. Together with tutors JanJoost van Elburg, Robert Hollingworth, three other soloists and a not too small choir, I had the opportunity to study Claudio Monteverdi´s Vespro della Beata Virgine of 1610. This, of course,
was a great opportunity to spend a week solely on a magnificent piece of musical literature.
However, what made it special was not only working with highly skilled colleagues, but also having a wonderful time with
nice people, some of whom I now can call friends.
I was happy to be given the opportunity to sing the Orfeo part in Monteverdi´s "favola in musica" in the summer course of 2000.
I started
my singing career about eight years ago, more or less by coincidence. I remained singing on amateur level until the end of 1998. Then I decided it was time to "give it a go". After all, one can always return to life as a
salesman!
As a relatively young classical singer I like to sing various genres, but I am specialising now as an oratorio singer, especially renaissance and baroque repertoire. If you would like more information
about my activities, I would gladly receive your calls, letters, or emails.
